A welcome piece, Vanessa, that chimes with many of the concerns articulated in our In Defence of Youth Work campaign. Indeed last year we published a book, 'This is Youth Work : Stories from Practice', which attempts to explain what we see as its distinctiveness. I'll link to your blog on our site and add a few more thoughts. At the moment we are in the throes of organising with a plurality of partners a possible conference 'The Future of Youth Work? The Future of Services for Young People'. Would be good to see you there reclaiming Youth Work together!

Best Wishes

I've been working with young people for a while too. I understand how frustrating the puzzled looks are when you try to explain what youth workers do, even more so when you try to explain it to young people themselves. For me, when I engage with a young person I want to give them a sense of respect. Listening, feeding back and helping them act upon their opinions and ideas a small but important acts of respect in a society that is focussed on keeping things the way they always have been and ignoring what and who is to come. I'm glad you're out there doing such work. Stick at it..
